Long video into viral clips

Last updated August 19, 2026
The take

The fastest way to turn a long talking-head video into a pile of short clips, if you treat it as a first pass and watch the credit meter.

Great for

Solo creators and content marketers who want a week of shorts from one recording, and who will review every clip before it ships.

The catch

Credits charge on source length. A 60-minute podcast eats 60 credits no matter how many clips you keep, and the bill climbs faster than the plan price suggests.

Bottom line

Reach for it when the job is first-pass clip finding from talking-head video. Skip it for multi-speaker panels, polished brand output, or a real editor.

What you're actually getting

Opus Clip is a clip finder. Paste a long video or a YouTube link, and its AI scans the whole recording, picks the moments it thinks will travel, cuts them into vertical clips, and slaps on animated captions.

The unit that matters is the source minute. One credit equals one minute of the video you feed in, charged on what you upload regardless of what comes out. A 60-minute podcast costs 60 credits whether it yields 3 clips or 20.

The output lands with a Virality Score from 0 to 100, plus auto-reframe, keyword-highlighted captions, and an optional AI hook glued to the front. Pro adds a scheduler that posts straight to TikTok, Reels, and Shorts. Treat the output as a first pass that still needs a human edit.

I love how easy and straightforward it is to use OpusClip. It's almost like a one-click-and-go process. You just upload your clip, let OpusClip know the content type and the clip length you want to generate, and then it handles pulling the clips, editing them, and captioning them within minutes.

Where it earns its keep

It pays off on talking-head content, podcasts, webinars, interviews, monologues. That is the format the clip-selection model was trained on, and where it genuinely finds beats a human would skim past.

The win is volume from one recording. One 45-minute episode becomes 15 to 20 candidate shorts in minutes, and the captions arrive in the keyword-highlighted social style that performs on TikTok and Reels.

G2 sits at 4.6 across 118 reviews, with one-click workflow and time saved the dominant praise. Reviewers who treat it as a starting point come away happy.

I can create multiple clips for social media in 5 minutes. I used to have to create multiple short form videos from scratch.

Where it'll bite you

Credit math is the first trap. Credits charge on source length, AI B-roll and processing failures burn extra credits at multipliers, and monthly credits expire 60 days after issue. A weekly 60-minute podcast blows through Pro's 300 credits in two episodes.

Cancellation is the second landmine. Projects become inaccessible 3 days after you cancel, even with paid credits left, and you cannot downgrade to Free if you hold more than 30 credits. Trustpilot runs about 4.0 with a 22 percent 1-star rate, heavy on billing and cancellation friction.

Output needs a human pass. Reviewers consistently discard 20 to 40 percent of clips, which cut off mid-thought, pick weak hooks, or lose the speaker on multi-person panels. The Virality Score is a guide at best.

I've been using Opus Clip for a few months on my youtube videos. I end up spending around 40 minutes going through them, and in the end I only post 1 or 2, or maximum 4. Most of them either feel generic, start in the middle of a thought, or just aren't strong enough on their own. At this point it feels like I'm not really saving time.

What it costs, really

Four tiers. Free is $0, 60 credits, watermarked, 9:16 only, 3-day storage, no editor. Starter is $15/mo, 150 credits, watermark-free, editor, social posting. Pro is $29/mo or about $14.50/mo annual ($174/yr), 300 credits, the scheduler, 2 seats, virality score, AI B-roll. Business is custom with API.

The sticker price is the small part. The real cost is source minutes times rerenders, with credits expiring in 60 days on monthly plans. Price your own pilot on one real long video before trusting the headline number.

I love how much time it saves me when looking for the best moments to post on social media. I am able to reach more users with my content. For 174 per year, the value is through the roof.

How easy it is to use, the virality score and the great customer service. I only wish it would have a motion graphic tool, but maybe they'll develop it soon.
